Acne Scarring

Acne scarring is caused by severe acne that is left untreated. Some cases of acne can leave you with acne scars which appear as depressed hollows or holes in your skin known as atrophic scars, or raised scars known as hypertrophic scarring. Redness and other discolouration from acne can also remain for a few months, but usually fades on its own.

What causes Acne Scarring ?

Acne scarring is caused when a severe acne breakout penetrates so deeply beneath the skin that it damages the surrounding tissues. Atrophic scars usually appear on the face and are depressed in the skin because of a lack of collagen made when the skin is healing. Collagen is vital to healing wounds, however hypertrophic scars which are raised, are caused because of too much collagen production during healing. Hypertrophic scars are more common with chest and back acne.

Do you suffer from the following?

Boxcar scars, U-shaped, shallow or deep atrophic scars
Ice pick, narrow V-shaped deep atrophic scars
Wide depression atrophic scars with a rolling appearance
Hypertrophic raised scars
Purple, red, or dark discolouration to the skin after acne has cleared
